Fall
Haircolor Forecast
1996
Everything's Coming Up S's
Fall/Winter 1996. The fashion shows are over and when it comes to hair everything's coming up S's. Slick, sleek, straight, sexy, sculpted, subtle, soft, swept-up. When Robert Craig works on new haircolor techniques, he maintains a strong mental focus. When asked how he comes up with his fashion forecasts Craig replied," I watch the 'couture' lines for the season. The master hair stylists, Oribe, Sahag and others, are always inventing new things to do with hair. Many times the look is soft and simple but more often than not the result is as bizarre as some of the clothes. I take those 'looks' and turn them into something wearable for my clients."
This fall is flavored with many styles from the same cut. Products are playing a big role. "Pomade, conditioning mousse, and sculpting gels are being used to multiply the number of looks clients can get from a single haircut", says Craig. "Because I don't 'style' hair, my clients are always discovering a new look when they leave. I like to use one or two products and then mold or shape the hair with my hands. When it looks great, I stop. Natural air drying is always appreciated in warmer weather and is healthier for the hair, especially when colored."
As a result of multiple looks, haircolor placement plays a major role. "Last spring, I was coloring hair based on the finished hairstyle", says Craig. "Now, I'm coloring hair based on multiple looks. Highlights have to be placed in such a way as to accomodate a variety of hair styles. I'm placing foils in 'S' patterns to avoid any particular committment to the way the hair is styled."
