Spring
Haircolor Forecast
1997

Brunettes abound

Spring/Summer 1997. New York salon owner/colorist Robert Craig is predicting 1997 to be the year of the brunette. "Color companies are producing the products, colorists can't wait to use them and clients can't wait to sport them." says Craig. "New shades of browns and reds are surfacing everywhere. Linda Evangilista has been sporting Clairol's new Chocolate Cherry all through the fall and everyone is anxiously awaiting her next new look." One buzzword to watch for is 'natural' but as with anything with that tag, don't let it mislead you. Chemicals are still present and the hair needs to be cared for as chemically treated hair should.

"I have been giving my clients a double or triple dip of color", says Craig, "by enriching their natural color with permanent color and then adding a minimum of pinlights (tiny highlights) in just the right places to add even more richness to the look. The final touch is a gloss or glaze to tone the lights and blend the shades. The end result is rich, multi-dimentional and color to dye for".

Hair will take on the 'look' of being colored in 1997. Haircolor is no longer just for covering grey, rather it has become a widely used cosmetic. An appearance enhancer so to speak. "Television has a major influence on fashion and as such, consumers are paying attention to actors' seasonal changes in hair cuts and color," says Craig.

"I expect this trend to catch on right away," says Craig, "color companies are loading the shelves with new product lines making it possible for clients to enrich their own color at home. These colors will be hard to resist as they sound as good as they look."
